Define: Film - Indie
No, it isn’t just any film out there you do!
Welcome to 21st Century Hollywood – A Webinar Series presented by Kevin E. West. Since the turn of the century this usage of the word “Indie” has gone through quite an evolution. It is true that one “could” always define it as any FILM (not TV or other medium) simply funded and made without movie Studio money. Certainly if you wish to be technical about a literal definition of the word itself then you are correct is the common usage of “Indie”, but if you’re talking about actually being accurate within Hollywood…you would not. Indie’s in their history became very popular during the 90s with many many films getting Oscar noms and a great deal of recognition. Now it isn’t that Indie’s were new in the 90s, as we’ve always had them, but films like Sex, Lies and Videotape really put them on the map. However, the fact that actors like to call virtually any film they’re in an “Indie” is just giving it too much credit and not accurate. Yes, it is any film financed outside of studio money but it is far more specific in today’s world…than that.
