Define: A Showrunner
Without question...top of the TV mountain!
Welcome to 21st Century Hollywood – A Webinar Series presented by Kevin E. West. Since about the turn of the 21st Century, ironically, considering the title of this entire Webinar library, the word Showrunner has simply become cemented into the very fabric of the Hollywood television community. It was created to identify the producer who held ultimate management and creative authority for the program. Typically this person is a writer but is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of a television series. While this used to commonly be called the Executive Producers there is a distinct reason why EP’s are still left to their title buy why Showrunners…rule their show. You see over time, the title of executive producer became applied to a wider range of roles, from those responsible for arranging financing to an honorific without any management duties. So it is imperative to an actor wanting to do Television in the U.S. to fully understand the scope and perspective the Showrunner has on a day to day basis.
