Good beautiful Saturday to you…
Yep, today is the day, May 1st…(19 years…don’t they go by in a blink).
Happy Birthday to The Actors’ Network. What a long strange trip its been.
It was a mere 19 years ago when I first sat down with Bill Bassett, Elisabeth Camara, Kevin Collins, Mel Metcalfe III, Leslie Nattinger, David Ridenhour & (my girlfriend) Suzi Kesler.
For many of our Grandfathered or Lifetime members, it may be a bit more nostalgic then it is for you if you just joined or have only or were only a member briefly. Regardless of how many memories or feelings you have about TAN…just know that its pure purpose and mission was always to make the plight/journey/task/effort/job/career/process…easier.
It was designed to communicate, congregate, gestate, pro-activate, and utilize our strengths and powers as a group. Sure technology has changed our lives, our thinking and often times our “belief system” about how we THINK we can pursue this profession to build a career. But I will still stand by the fact that the challenges I faced in 1987, 88, 89, and 90 which lead me to form this group…STILL stand today. So much of our profession is based on how you approach situations and handle situations as an emotional human…who is being judged/bought/sold.
TAN is still the only place of its kind, no matter how many Workshop companies exist or how many online submission websites there are or how many people try to plagiarize little pieces of TAN all over the city and country. Do you know why? Because of YOU.
Because from the first meeting on 5/1/91, to today, the element that cannot be duplicated is you…your passion, your communication and conversation in a Power Group, the “way you handle” your questions with a guest and “how you go about” getting after your career. We have a LONG long list of professional success, and at the end of the day, it is because of who and how…we went about “attacking this city.” I believe that is the reason why so many professionals quickly line up to praise The Actors’ Network…and yet, we’ve never given them a dime.
Whether here now, gone tomorrow, whether acting in LA is one day in your rearview mirror or you hold your ground and build a journeyman/star career we hope that you at least understand that TAN is/was/always will be about success through the perspective of mistakes made by yourself as well as others…and certainly by helping one another…coupled with ACTION.
TAN’s legacy lives and breathes in the time we’ve helped save, the frustration we’ve helped you avoid, the insight gained and the edge you garnered by joining this band of artists who sat on a couch at 3928 Carpenter Ave in Studio City…some 19 years ago today.
Thanks for joining us…along this long and winding journey of art and business in the City of Angels.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
My level best…always,
