I didn’t coin the expression that I titled this post with, but I’ve heard it said lots during my lifetime. There are times when you’ve been cast in a project and you need to follow as the director brings your performance to a fine pitch. I know, sometimes you’re not blessed with that kind of director, but you still do the best you can. While Los Angeles is having it’s coolest Summer possibly EVER, let’s hope your acting pursuits are creating some heat. When I taught the first twelve years after college, I enjoyed the three favorite things about being an educator: June, July and August. I suspect we actors get into a vacation mode somewhat during the Summers as well, what with vacations, friends coming to visit and just great beach weather.
So be sure to have a glorious August as we head toward the Fall season of T.V and movies yet to be filmed and crack open that new list of goals and plans to keep the heat going to the end of the year! Continue reading
In passing tests to get my insurance licenses, I had to learn the difference between Risk Avoiding and Risk Managing. The example given was that if a person wanted to ‘Avoid’ being in an auto accident then simply that person never gets in a CAR! If that same person wanted to ‘Manage’ that risk than that person is properly licensed, drives defensively, only rides with good drivers, doesn’t drink & drive, etc. Continue reading
In an earlier post, I discussed the work we do to support ourselves while we ‘work’ to get more acting jobs. It’s not uncommon that that second or ‘B’ job starts workin’ pretty good for you. Oh oh! “Danger, Will Robinson”. What’s the danger? It is simply this: if that second job starts paying you quite a bit of money and you then lease the expensive car and upgrade your living arrangements and start living ‘high off the hog’, you’ve just become a slave to your work. What happened to that goal of being more available for auditions, meetings, drop offs, etc.? Continue reading
